All pay is take-home pay. Figures cover the 13 western states (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming). Each starts from the state's median salary for the role (BLS 2025) and subtracts 2026 federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and state income tax for a single filer taking the standard deduction. It leaves out city and county taxes, state disability and paid-leave payroll deductions (about 1% in California, Oregon and Washington), retirement contributions and health premiums, so real paychecks will be somewhat smaller. Half of workers in a state earn more than its median and half earn less. BLS doesn't split RNs by specialty, so specialty notes describe where a role usually falls, not a measured figure. Costs are tuition and required fees for the whole program, not living expenses; most are estimates built from published per-credit rates and typical public-school ranges.
Cost of living and value. The cost-of-living adjustment uses the Bureau of Economic Analysis' 2024 Regional Price Parities (released February 2026), where an average US state is 100 (California 110.7, New Mexico 92.2). It's a statewide average; Denver costs more than Pueblo. The "raise covers school" figure divides the program cost by the after-tax raise over the job you'd have without the degree (nursing assistant pay for first nursing degrees, RN pay for graduate degrees), using the state you pick or US medians.
Practical details. Schedule tags describe what's typical and vary a lot by employer. Experience requirements and competitiveness come from accreditors and program admissions pages; individual schools can ask for more. Licensure, NP practice authority and CRNA supervision rules are as of late 2026 and change through state legislation, so confirm with the state board before relying on them. Aid programs have limited funding, yearly deadlines and work commitments.

Times are typical full-time ranges and vary by school and state. Certifications usually require a set number of practice hours in the specialty before you can sit for the exam. Nurse practitioner scope depends on state law: Arizona and Colorado give NPs full practice authority, while many states require physician collaboration.
